The Anthology Project: a collection of poems and true short stories for kids in foster care, by kids (and now-adults) of foster care

The couple who raised $135k on Kickstarter in 2015 to create a short film on foster care is back at it again: this time creating a limited-edition printed book. An anthology, to be precise. Which, when defined, is “a published collection of poems or other pieces of writing.” What makes this project unique is hearing the voices of youth and now-adults who have experienced foster care. Curated by the ReMovedFilm team, this beautifully designed volume contains inspiring stories and poetry from the mouths of those who have lived through foster care and the situations that lead to it.

The ReMoved films have over 50 million views worldwide and have created a community of people who feel for the first time that their story has been told and their journey is worth being known. Taking this experience from viewing on the internet and inscribing it in tangible printed material is the latest project coming from the non-profit ReMovedFilm and its creators, Nathanael and Christina Matanick.

There are approximately 400,000 children in foster care in the United States today, and it was the Matanicks’ experience of becoming foster parents that inspired them to create the viral short film ReMoved and subsequently the non-profit that bears its name.

“The response from millions who have viewed our films convinced us that we need more content like this in the world. We’ve now created a handful of short films on this topic and recognize the similar void of content in the printed world, which is why we’re compiling this anthology,” said Christina Matanick.  

Based in California, the non-profit ReMovedFilm has a global reach and its films have been incorporated into training programs throughout the world. Submissions for the Anthology Project were accepted online, and the volume is being designed in California and printed in Minnesota.
